Foundation in Dance Instruction

The Foundation in Dance Instruction is aimed at those wishing to prepare for the Certificate in Dance Education.

The Foundation in Dance Instruction is open to students who hold Intermediate and who will be 17 years of age before the end of the academic in which they register for the FDI.

Level Requirements
Module 1 Teaching Skills Students will develop observation, analytical and evaluation skills, whilst understanding the value of a range of learning techniques. Gain an appreciation of teaching and learning methods as a preparation for practical teaching. They will be able to identify and evaluate the various aspects and discuss them with their tutor.
Unit 1 Observation and Understanding of Learning Techniques
Module 2 Contextual Studies Students will learn how to ensure the health and safety of pupils through knowledge of safety issues, health promotion and first aid. They will also study the physical, emotional and social development in pupils of all ages, communication and relationships in class and learning in dance from a developmental perspective.

Module 3 Dance Practise Students study the syllabi up to Grade 5 or Silver Medal and key stages in physical and cognitive development. They will, at the same time, build a sound technical and artistic base within their own performance, whilst selecting an aspect of their genre to study that will widen their own knowledge of the subject.

As Modules 1 and 2 are generic to all genres, they are only taken once. The student then completes the qualification by taking module 3 for each dance genre.

For example, a teacher who has completed all three modules at FDI level in Latin American, will only have to take Module 3 in any of the remaining genre: Modern Ballroom, Classical Sequence, Disco Freestyle or Rock ‘n’ Roll.
