ISTD Dancesport Reception – 23rd May 2009

by Claire Thompson, first published in DANCE magazine

As the sun began to set in the sky, twinkles of light appeared in the distance. The lights shone more brightly as it grew darker, revealing a breathtaking view of the Acropolis and Lycabettus Hill. Greek music played in the background as the roof garden restaurant began to buzz with many enthusiastic dance teachers from different parts of Athens and Agrinio. Seeing all of these faces again reminded me of my first trip to Greece a year ago.

The atmosphere even then was electric as I met so many keen students and teachers, who at the time were preparing to be the first Dancesport candidates taking Medal, Grade and Associate examinations. During this visit I could see they had been successful in their challenge of adding the Dancesport genres to their established Modern Theatre and Ballet training and were meeting fresh challenges as they were extending their new skills. This first official reception by the ISTD in Greece was very special to them and everyone present was not only happy but also appreciative of the lovely surroundings and marvellous buffet.

The music quietened as it was time for the introductions. Marion Lane began by welcoming everyone, thanking them for their enthusiasm in incorporating Dancesport within their schools and being at the beginning of ISTD Dancesport in Greece. Marion gave special thanks to Mary Chorianopoulou and Vicky Zorba from Athens, whose contact with her just over 2 years ago began her first links with the country and she also extended her thanks to Eleni Pisiou from Agrinio for forging these links further by the work in her school.

Richard Hunt, the International Dancesport Organiser, then continued, saying how he was pleased to have been invited to Athens for the reception. He also explained that his work included coordinating the examiners internationally that would now continue with the excellent start in Dancesport examinations in Greece. He welcomed any suggestions and comments from the teachers and finally introduced the new Chief Executive of the ISTD, Julian Amey. In his reply Julian said that he was delighted to see the work taking place in Greece and was very keen for the ISTD to develop in this area. He thanked the teachers of Greece for their loyalty and hard work and pledged the full support of the ISTD.

The evening continued with a lot of valuable discussions, lively talk, laughter and enjoyment. I could only think that this memorable evening heralded a bright future for ISTD Dancesport in Greece, as it was played out against the backdrop of beautiful, ancient Athens.
